Biography

Valeriy Feliksovych Ivanov was born on July 19, 1961 in Luhansk. He gained his first work experience at the age of 17, at the Voroshilovhradska 1-2 underground mine.

Education

He received his higher education at Luhansk Pedagogical Institute, which he graduated in 1983 with a degree in History.

Carrer

After several years of teaching, Valeriy Ivanov’s career became tied to Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv starting in 1989. He initially worked there as a graduate student, assistant and associate professor at the Faculty of Journalism. In 1995–1999, he served as Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Institute of Journalism.

In 1996, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Methodology and Techniques of Researching the Content of Mass Communication”, earning the degree of Doctor of Philological Sciences. He received the academic title of Professor in 2000.

Since 1997, Ivanov has worked as a professor at the Department of Periodicals. He later headed the Department of Organization of Mass Media Activities, and since 2007 he was appointed Head of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations at the Institute of Journalism, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He also taught classes at the Department of Social Communications, Mariupol State University.

Since 2001, Valeriy Ivanov has headed the Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP). He is a member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine and, until 2021 was a member of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics. He also participates in the activities of ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association), the Centre for Free Press, and the All-Ukrainian Foundation "Journalistic Initiative". Since 2024, he has been a member of the Public Council under the Parliamentary Committee on Freedom of Speech. He is also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian National Professional Journalism Competition “Honour of the Profession”.

Scientific Heritage

Valeriy Ivanov's scientific output includes over 550 publications, authored independently or in co-authorship. Among them are 30 monographs, 10 textbooks, 26 teaching aids and 48 brochures. Among the most famous are “Content Analysis: Methodology and Research Techniques", "Sociology of Mass Communication", "Information Legislation", "Media and Political Advertising in the Mirror of the Law", etc.

Recent Events

One of Ivanov's leading areas of activity is media education. He actively promotes critical thinking, advocates for the implementation of standards of journalistic ethics and aims to increase information literacy of the population. In this context, he participates in numerous trainings, forums and conferences.

Thus, in October 2024, as part of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week, the Academy of Ukrainian Press held a webinar on fostering critical thinking among students. Valeriy Ivanov, one of the key speakers, emphasized the importance of integrating media education into curricula. In March-April 2025, he joined the “STOPmanipulator” trainings organized by the AUP with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. The event was dedicated to techniques for identifying fake information and countering information attacks.

In January 2025, the Academy of Ukrainian Press, together with the Ministry of Education and Science, held an online forum on the regional development of media education. The event drew 850 participants from across Ukraine.

Personal life

Valeriy Ivanov comes from a family of engineers: his father worked as a mining engineer, and his mother was a chemical engineer. Valeriy Ivanov's wife is Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences and a professor. His son, Denys Ivanov, chose the path of a journalist and specializes in investigative reporting.
